NOTICE
A Belgian painter, he trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent under Jean Delvin.
Influenced by Impressionist painters, he was a member of the Ecole de Laethem and the "Vie et lumière" luminist circle. He exhibited successfully for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 1909, then won a silver medal at the Vienna International Exhibition in 1911. He moved to London in 1914, where he established a reputation as a portraitist. He met Thomas Hardy, Eden Phillpotts and Joseph Conrad.
He moved to Brussels in 1926, where he took an interest in the burgeoning Expressionist movement. Today, his work is mainly exhibited at the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, as well as at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
