Sir Franck William BRANGWYN (1867-1956) & the Avenue Press Ltd Design for book illustration, washes Ink and pencil on paper Unsigned Drawing on the reverse of a typed letter from the publisher "The Avenue Press Ltd" to Franck William Brangwyn Size (whole sheet): 40 x 27.5 cm (Minor foxing, folds) PROVENANCE Private collection NOTICE British painter, draughtsman, engraver and upholsterer of Anglo-Welsh origin, he studied at the South Kensington Art School and worked with William Morris at Merton Abbey (decorating the Lords Chamber at the Palace of Westminster). He traveled to Algeria, Morocco and South Africa; largely influenced by the Symbolist movement of John Ruskin and Siegfried Bing, who introduced him to Japanese art, he helped decorate the façade of the Maison de l'Art Nouveau in Paris in 1895. In 1899, he became a member of the Société nouvelle de peintres et de sculpteurs founded in Paris, and from 1920 onwards, he delivered engravings to the art magazine Byblis.
