Felicja PACANOWSKA (1907 - 2002) - Lot 5
Felicja PACANOWSKA (1907 - 2002) Intimacy, circa 1960 Oil on canvas Signed "F. Pacanowska" in the lower middle, titled and stamped on the reverse. 41 x 33 cm Of Polish origin, Felicia Pacanowska left Warsaw for Paris in 1932, where she joined the artists of the Ecole de Paris. Influenced by cubist figuration at the start of her career, she gradually moved towards geometric abstraction in the 1950s. She tried her hand at engraving, working in particular with the etching technique. During the Second World War, she worked as an industrial designer in an aircraft factory. She escaped the Vel d'Hiv roundup in 1942, then joined the Académie de Rome to study sculpture. The strength of her figures, combined with the cubist construction of her forms, recalls her apprenticeship in sculpture. Particularly marked by the violence of the Holocaust and the loss of her loved ones, the artist gradually replaced figuration with a powerful, abstract radicalism. In our work, deconstructed forms reflect great emotional depth. Ochre and blue tones soften the presence of red and black, as do the broad, flat brushstrokes. This painting, full of contrasts, is a true testimony to the artist's feelings.
