Grégoire MICHONZE (1902-1982) - Lot 15
Grégoire MICHONZE (1902-1982) Children, village scene Oil on canvas Signed "Michonze" lower right 72 x 50 cm Framed Provenance Private collection Details A French painter of Russian origin, Grégoire Michonze came from a modest Jewish family. Studying in Bucharest, he befriended Victor Brauner and discovered Surrealism. Upon his arrival in Paris, Max Ernst introduced him to the Surrealists: André Breton, Paul Éluard, Yves Tanguy, Louis Aragon, André Masson, Man Ray... He attended meetings at the Café Cyrano. He met Soutine and spent time with him in Vence. By the mid-thirties, his compositions had become denser and more varied, showing the influence of Brueghel, Bosch and the painters of the Quattrocento. At the same time, he painted portraits of great delicacy. His personal style, which he would later call "surreal naturalism", asserted itself outside the mainstream. His style changed after the Second World War, and he took part in numerous group exhibitions: Galerie de Berri, Jean-Marc Vidal, Berri Raspail, Drouant David, Roux-Hentchel, Galerie John Devoluy and the Salon d'Automne. He went on to exhibit internationally, and took part in major exhibitions at the Petit Palais. Inspired by landscapes, scenes of daily life and villages, his painting was tinged with surrealist and naive reminiscences until the end of his life.
