Edouard PAIL (1851-1916) - Lot 28
Edouard PAIL (1851-1916) Landscape with sheep and shepherd Oil on canvas Signed "E. Pail" lower left Gilded and carved wood frame 101 x 128 cm (Age craquelure, top edge missing due to old frame) Provenance Private collection, Osenat sale Details Édouard Pail was a French painter who drew his inspiration from the landscapes of the Nivernais region, which he treated in the style of the Crozant school, to which he belonged. A plein-air painter, his favorite subjects are pastures, heather, farmyards, shady rivers and misty pink panoramas. Often in shades of green, brown and mauve, his works reflect gentleness and poetry. The Crozant School informally refers to a group of landscape painters who settled around the village of Crozant, on the northern edge of the Creuse department, hence the name. From the 1850s onwards, a large number of landscape painters worked on the banks of the two Creuses (Grande Creuse and Petite Creuse), the Sédelle and the Gargilesse, near the towns of Crozant, Fresselines and Gargilesse. For almost a century, some 500 painters frequented the area to find inspiration. Among the landscape painters who visited Crozant were international artists such as Impressionist Armand Guillaumin, Surrealist Francis Picabia, Jules Dupré, Claude Monet, Léon Detroy, Fernand Maillaud, Paul Madeline and Georges Sabbagh.
