Henry Jean Augustin LEYS (Hendrik Leys, Henri Leys) (1815-1869) Le Passant Oil on canvas Signed "H Leys" lower right 40 x 34 cm Framed PROVENANCE Private collection NOTICE A native of Antwerp, he is one of the leading exponents of the historical-romantic school in Belgian art. A pioneer of the realist movement in Belgium, his history, genre and portrait paintings earned him a European reputation. Traveling to Paris in 1835, he spent some time in Eugène Delacroix's studio, where he became friendly with Paul Delaroche. As his neo-Renaissance style took hold, he set about reconstructing 16th-century Antwerp, combining realistic detail with archaic, troubadour-style craftsmanship, and was enriched by contact with 15th- and 16th-century German painting (Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein the Younger, Albrecht Dürer) during his trip to Germany in 1852. He successfully participated (gold medal for Bartel de Haze's Trentaines) in the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He became a member of Belgium's Royal Academy of Painting. Several artists studied with him, including James Tissot, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and his nephew Henri de Braekeleer. He won one of the eight Grand Medals of Honor at the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris, where he also exhibited Promenade hors les murs (Royal Collections of Belgium).
