Louis-Marie SICARD dit SICARDI (1746-1825) Portrait of a Woman, 1821 Pastel on paper Signed "Sicardi" and dated lower left 22 x 17 cm Framed (Tear at lower right corner) PROVENANCE Private collection NOTICE A French miniaturist painter, he was King Louis XVI's miniaturist painter. Until the Revolution, Sicardi painted only portraits of the royal family, court princes and princesses, and a few other figures known from exhibition catalogs. He is known to have painted many portraits of Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI, including those in the Musée du Louvre and the Wallace Collection in London. He took part in the Salons from 1791, where he presented a portrait of Mirabeau. He was admitted to the Institut de France and included in the First Consul's list of France's ten best painters, alongside Eugène Isabey. During the Restoration, he was appointed painter to the King's Cabinet.
