NOTICE
A Belgian painter, watercolorist and engraver from Antwerp, Léon Abry specialized in portraits and military scenes. As our charming village view testifies, he also produced interesting landscapes. Trained at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he practiced painting on the motif with Nicaise De Keyser. A fervent watercolorist, he became a member of the Royal Belgian Society of Watercolorists in 1886 and a founding member of the L'Art indépendant group in 1887. He was also a member of the Cercle des XIII d'Anvers in 1891.
Although his early works were marked by academicism, he evolved towards plein-air painting with Impressionist overtones. Genre subjects and scenes of Antwerp manners were followed by a number of paintings in the humorous military genre, of which he was one of the initiators in Belgium.
