NOTICE
A French writer and painter, he was a member of the proletarian literature group and enjoyed great success with his novel L'Hôtel du Nord. An admirer of Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse, he studied painting at the Académie Biloul between 1920 and 1921, where he met Christian Caillard and Georges-André Klein. In 1923 and 1924, Eugène Dabit continued his artistic studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he met Béatrice Appia and Maurice Loutreuil. With the latter as leader, Christian Caillard, Béatrice Appia, Georges-André-Klein and Pinchus Krémègne, Eugène Dabit was part of the "Groupe du Pré-Saint-Gervais".
Present at the Salon des Indépendants in 1927, 1928 and 1929, inspired by Maurice de Vlaminck whose atmospheres he imitated, he exhibited with Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine and Maurice Utrillo. In 1929, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries with the canvases Paysage de neige and Mauresque.
In 1936, at the invitation of André Gide, following the success of his book L'Hôtel du Nord, Eugène Dabit made a final literary trip to the U.S.S.R. in the company of Jef Last, Louis Guilloux, Jacques Schiffrin and Pierre Herbart. André Gide, who recounted the trip in Retour de l'U.R.S.S., dedicated the book to Eugène Dabit: "To the memory of Eugène Dabit. I dedicate these pages, reflections of what I lived and thought close to him, with him."
