A painter originally from Lausanne, he moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, where he met Félix Vallotton, Francis Picabia and Edouard Morerod. Initially influenced by Impressionism, he spent several summers with Picabia in Seine et Marne, painting from the motif. Discovering Brittany in the early 1910s, he developed a passion for the interior scenes that made him such a success at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. He gradually moved away from his early influences towards "naïve" painting, reflecting a popular, humble, rustic humanity. Particularly sensitive to the contrast between indoors and outdoors, the beam of light running through most of his paintings seems to bear witness to the summer heat in cool, shady interiors.
In our work, the artist's left background features a drawing dedicated by Edouard Morerod, depicting Marius Borgeaud as a street musician. This drawing came from the Borgeaud estate, was later acquired by Jean-Claude Givel and finally donated to the Musée d'Art de Pully in 2021 by Anne-Claire Givel-Fuchs.
