NOTICE
An Italian painter originally from Sicily, Petruolo was a student of Gabriele Smargiassi at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts. He is famous for his coastal landscapes near Naples and his very rare landscapes of Calabria. His landscapes from 1875 to 1898 reflect the style of the Posillipo school, with influences from Edoardo Dalbono. After 1898, his work became more personal and distinctive, influenced by Symbolism.
He was much appreciated by English and American visitors to Naples. His studio was visited by such luminaries as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Prince of Battenberg and Princess Louise, sister of King Edward of England. In 1889, he spent three months in Malta with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. He then embarked on a painting tour of Spain, visiting Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Zaragoza. The works he produced during this trip were shown at an exhibition at Clarence House, London.
