Trained at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, he joined Nicola Palizzi's studio in 1853 to complete his apprenticeship. In 1859, he took part in the fine arts exhibition at the Real Museo Borbonico in Naples, winning the silver medal, and later became interested in the Resìna school, a community of Verista painters. His artistic research focused on the study of nature in the open air.
From 1867, he regularly exhibited his work at the Naples Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts (Società Promotrice di Belle Arti) and other exhibitions. He was awarded the silver medal at the Parma Fine Arts Exhibition in 1870 for a historical painting, and the bronze medal at the Vienna International Exhibition in 1873. From 1878 to 1888, he lived in Paris and, with the support of his friend Giuseppe De Nittis, came into contact with the art dealer Adolphe Goupil. During these ten years, he returned to Italy several times, staying in Milan and Verona, and continuing his work as an illustrator.
Dalbono was one of the founders of the Neapolitan Society of Artists (Società Napoletana degli Artisti), and later of the Artistic Circle (Circolo Artistico). In 1897 he was appointed professor of painting at the Naples Academy, and in 1905 curator of the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Naples. He presented his work at international exhibitions in Venice in 1895, St. Louis (Missouri) in 1904 and Rome in 1911. Francesco Paolo Michetti was one of his students.
