NOTICE
He trained at the Brussels Academy under Jef Lambeaux; initially interested in sculpture, he turned to painting and admired the work of the Fauves. Using broad flat tints of color and simplified forms, he creates luminous, innovative compositions. A representative of Brabant's Fauvism, he frequented Rik Wouters. He was the first in Belgium to grasp the unprecedented possibilities offered by the expressive simplification of form and color (first Fauvist watercolors in 1906).
The immediate maturity of his Fauvism guided the Brabançons, particularly Rik Wouters in his early years, and in 1912, three solo exhibitions placed him among the young Belgian masters.
Like most of his fellow Brabant painters, around 1918 he fell in love with more constructed forms, toning down the height of his tones and focusing more on the form, taking it towards a personal expressionism that was less wild than that of the painters from Laethem-Saint-Martin (Ghent). A colorist and lyrist by nature, towards the end of the twenties he returned to a more disciplined, intensely poetic Fauvism, favoring still lifes towards the end of his life.
