He came from a family of scholars. His father, Sha Songshou, a doctor and teacher, gave him a Confucian education. From childhood, Sha Qi showed a talent for painting. He received a thorough education at various art schools in Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou, where he met his mentor Xu Beihong, who would guide his artistic career. In 1937, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. A student of Alfred Bastien, Sha Qi inherited a touch that blended impressionism and naturalism. He was his second Chinese pupil after Wu Zuoren, another pillar of modern Chinese art. Versatile in painting, drawing and sculpture, his mastery earned him a gold medal at the end of his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1938. From 1940 onwards, he held several solo and group exhibitions. After trips to the Netherlands and Great Britain, Sha Qi returned to China in 1946. Despite political and social upheavals, his talents were recognized in China thanks to the help of his mentor Xu Beihong and former Premier Zhou Enlai. Long forgotten by the public, Sha Qi returned to the art scene in the 1980s with several solo exhibitions in Hangzhou and the capital. A portraitist, landscape artist and still-life artist, he quickly achieved international renown.
