NOTICE
An Orientalist and genre painter, Clemente Pujol de Guastavino began his artistic studies at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, before moving to Paris in 1876. He became a pupil of Louis Cabat, then Jean-Léon Gérôme, and met the Orientalist painter Léon Bonnat, a friend of Gérôme. The artist signs a contract with the famous art dealer Adolphe Goupil.
Pujol de Guastavino painted genre scenes, which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1876 until 1905. He also painted oriental scenes and took part in the Spanish section of the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. In 1889, he won a medal of honor for his painting "Danse maure".
Like many Orientalist painters of the period, Clemente Pujol de Guastavino collected numerous objects and antiques, from which he drew inspiration for the composition of his paintings. The treatment of fabrics, ornaments and metal objects was particularly meticulous.
In his orientalist works, Pujol de Guastavino often depicts hunters with falcons or guards armed with their rifles, musicians or merchants in front of richly worked doors or walls.
