Early edition, circa 1950. 26 x 11 cm (Patina, scratches, small chips) NOTICE Jean Perzel is a major figure in Art Deco lighting design of the XXᵉ century, renowned for transforming artificial light into a central element of decorative space. Trained as a glass painter in Munich at an early age, he then traveled around Europe to perfect his skills before settling in Paris in 1910. After serving in the Foreign Legion during the First World War and becoming a French citizen, Perzel worked with master glassmaker Jacques Grüber before founding his own lighting company in 1923, at the heart of the Art Deco movement. His workshop, located on rue de la Cité Universitaire in Paris, quickly became a recognized design center for his pendant, wall and table lamps. His works are characterized by pure lines, elegant volumes and high-quality materials, combining cut, frosted or opaline glass with bronze frames. Perzel exhibited his pieces at the Salon d'Automne and collaborated with architects and interior designers on commissions for refined interiors, liners such as the Normandie, embassies and private residences. Each luminaire is designed to dialogue with the architecture and sublimate the space through light, rather than simply illuminate it. His influence extends far beyond Art Deco, and his company continues to exist today, perpetuating a century-old craftsmanship recognized by the French Ministry of Culture's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label.
