JAPAN, Arita - Lot 151
JAPAN, Arita Large porcelain apothecary bottle decorated in blue on a white background with blossoming peonies and birds. Marked "IC" in a laurel wreath below the base. Late 17th century. Height: 53 cm (approx.) (Accidents, multiple restorations) Expert : Cabinet ANSAS PAPILLON / Johanna BLANCARD DE LÉRY THIS LOT WILL BE CONSIGNED TO DROUOT'S WAREHOUSE AFTER THE SALE, IT WILL NOT BE RETURNED. Please refer to the conditions of the auction house concerning the withdrawal of lots before bidding. NOTICE The shape of these bottles is derived from a Dutch glass bottle. The Dutch East India Company must have brought a large number of these to Deshima, where they were used on board ships, in kitchens and by pharmacists. The initials "I.C." could stand for Johannes Camphuys. Before becoming Governor General of the Dutch East Indies in Batavia from 1684 to 1691, Johannes Camphuys was "Opperhoofd" in Deshima intermittently between 1670 and 1677. From this period he retained a deep love for Japan and its people. However, Christiaan Jörg, in Fine & Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections, considers it more likely that "I.C." could stand for ius citronensis, i.e. "lemon juice".
