NOTICE A Neapolitan painter from a family of artists, Giuseppe Carelli trained in the wake of the Scuola di Posillipo, a 19th-century landscape school. Often presented as the direct heir of Neapolitan veduta, this school continued the tradition of topographical representation of urban and coastal landscapes, enriched by a more vivid and spontaneous luminous and atmospheric sensibility. and spontaneous sensibility. Initially trained by his father, Consalvo Carelli, Giuseppe completed his training at the at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts and then furthered his knowledge in Rome, studying the masters and great Italian painting. Faithful to the Posillipist tradition, while developing his own way of observing nature, he travels Italy to capture the changing atmospheres of the sea, coastlines and cities, depicting lively seascapes, fishermen's scenes, the slopes of Vesuvius or the islands of the Gulf, as well as gouaches, etchings and lithographs. His seascapes, which make up a significant part of his output, still attract the interest of their pictorial qualities and narrative appeal. He depicts sailing boats and barques, coasts, harbors and local maritime life with an attention to detail and a liveliness that renders the scenes scenes both realistic and poetic. Carelli captures the reflections of the water, the movement of the waves and the changing light of the sky, reflecting his fascination with the Neapolitan coastline. In Fisherman on the Gulf of Naples, with Vesuvius in the background, we can observe the finesse with which Giuseppe Carelli delves into the depiction of the gulf's shores. In the background, Vesuvius rises the depth and monumentality of the landscape. Carelli's work is little documented, but appreciated in private and regional collections. attentive to his environment, capable of combining precise observation with subtle sensitivity.
