Cesare PERUZZI (1894–1995) - Lot 39
Cesare PERUZZI (1894–1995) Portrait of a Young Woman at a Mirror Oil on panel Signed "Peruzzi" lower left 22 x 15.5 cm Framed DESCRIPTION He devoted himself to drawing from a very young age and studied the craft in Macerata, where he met the very young Ivo Pannaggi, who encouraged him to take up painting. In the years that followed, he moved to Rome to enroll at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts. In 1915, he was invited to the third international exhibition of the Secession held in Rome, where he exhibited alongside Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Virgilio Guidi, and Felice Casorati. He temporarily interrupted his studies during World War I to fight on the Albanian front. His war drawings date from this period and are of significant interest today for their documentary value. After completing his studies, he attended the French Academy in Rome, where he honed his skills in nude drawing. From 1923 onward, he devoted himself primarily to watercolor, creating intimate and delicate works; he participated in numerous exhibitions, notably the first and second International Watercolor Exhibitions in Milan in 1923 and 1925, the Maritime Exhibition at the Barcelona International Exposition in 1929, and the Exhibition of Italian Artists at the Krefeld Museum, where he exhibited his *Contadini in riposo* (Peasants at Rest). In 1932, the Universal Congregation commissioned Cesare Peruzzi to create the cycle of Seven Episodes from the Life of Saint Francis Xavier, which he executed in the Chapel of the Indian Catholics within the Basilica of the Holy House, and in 1933, still in the basilica, he painted scenes from the life of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Another commission was the altarpiece for the Abbey of Santa Maria in Potenza in Porto Recanati, which depicts the Virgin Mary, Saint Bernard, founder of the Cistercians, and Saint Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of these regions.
